One of the new  7 wonders of the world, Chichen Itza is the remnants of an ancient Mayan city that was swallowed up by the jungle after Spanish colonisation. Now restored, and populated mainly by tourists and souvenir sellers, it's worth the approx. 2.5 hour trek from Cancun.
